Matte or glossy laminating? How to choose a finish

Lamination is a thin protective film for the print against moisture, dirt, and wear. But it also affects the look and feel in the hand. Which variant to choose?
Matte Laminate
Reduces reflections, making the text easy to read from any angle. The surface is velvety to the touch and conveys an elegant and subdued impression. It pairs well with premium brands, offices, advisers, and industries where seriousness matters.
Gloss Laminate
Enhances colors and contrast, gives the print “juiciness.” It works where vivid photography or strong graphics matter — gastronomy, beauty, events. The downside is light reflections and visible fingerprints.
Soft-touch — a third option
Soft-touch laminate combines a matte look with an exceptionally pleasant, “rubbery” texture. This finish is what customers most often comment on when they pick up a business card.
When to skip laminating
On metallic and textured papers (Stardream, Cordenons, Sirio) lamination is usually not available — the foil would neutralize the texture effect you pay for. In our calculator, the lamination option disappears automatically when you choose such paper. If you plan to write on the business card with a pen (e.g., appointment date), choose uncoated paper with no lamination.
A quick cheat sheet
Elegance and readability — matte. Vivid colors and photos — gloss. “Wow” feel in the touch — soft-touch. Decorative or writing paper — without lamination. The safest choice? Order both variants as samples and compare in real life.
